Abstract

957,036. Selective punching machines. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. March 28, 1963 [April 10, 1962], No. 12369/63. Heading B4B. A card punching machine having at least one punching tool and actuating means reciprocable to drive the tool operatively against the cards is characterized in that the actuating means are guided by at least one flexible member which is secured in place in order to limit displacement of the actuating means transversely to the direction of reciprocation and which is bendable in order to permit reciprocable movement in said direction. A card T, Fig. 1B, is punched by means of a line of punches 10 which are actuated by means of a striker bar 12 through the intermediary of spring-influenced pivotallymounted interposers 18 and a rocking lever 20. The bar 12 is secured to a carriage 100 which is secured at its ends to a pair of pillars 104 which are supported upon the one ends of leaf springs 108, the other ends of which are secured to another pair of pillars 110 fixed to the frame 80 of the machine. The interposers are normally latched by means of the arms 22a of bellcranks 22 and selected interposers are released from latching position when associated solenoids 40 are energized. Eccentrically-mounted stops 72 limit the return motion of the bell-cranks which are prevented from rebounding off the stops by means of cushioning levers 24. The selected punches are extracted from the card by means of a stripper bail 60. The carriage is reciprocated by means of cams 134 on a drive shaft 130 engaging follower rollers 136 sup. ported by the carriage. The carriage is returned after each punching stroke by means of springs 140 acting downwardly against U- shaped seats 142. In a modification, Fig. II, a pair of leaf springs 108 are secured at the one ends to a bracket 210 fixed to the frame 80<SP>1</SP> of the machine and at the other ends between the lower end of a carriage 100<SP>1</SP> and a striker bar 12<SP>1</SP> secured thereto. The upper end of the carriage forms a yoke 200 which rotatably receives and is mounted upon a disc 202 eccentrically carried upon a drive shaft. Specification 895,080 is referred to.
