A machine for perforating a record 44 comprises a striker support 10 reciprocated by means of an eccentric drive mechanism 24 and having a surface 12 which actuates each of a number of punches 38 through an interposer 60 when a selecting electromagnet 67 is not energized, the interposer being held in the operative position by means of a tension spring 64. The interposer and the armature 54 of the electromagnet form a unitary assembly 50 which is fastened to a block 46, the assembly including leaf springs 52, 56. A re-set device for positioning the armature against the face of the electromagnet comprises an arm 76 movable about a fixed pivot 78 and connected by a movable pivot 80 to an arm 82 coupled by a movable pivot 84 to the link 32 connecting the striker support to the drive mechanism. The interposer is movable through an aperture in a plate 77 secured to the striker support, the arrangement being such that when the electromagnet is energized, the leading edge of the interposer is in line with the rear edge of the plate 77. The striker support is mounted by means of leaf springs 14, 16 on a block 18. Each punch has two notches, one of which is engaged by a stop bar and the other of which is engaged by a stripper bar. The machine shown is still suitable for punching all the rows of a single column or all the columns of a single row. In a modification (Figs. 4 to 7, not shown) the machine is suitable for punching all the rows of two columns or all the columns of two rows. In a further modification (Fig. 8, not shown) the tension spring 64 is replaced by a compression spring 210.
