A selective card punching machine comprises a plurality of punches 3 divided into three groups which are simultaneously operable to punch information on to a punch card inserted into the machine, the punches of a first group being arranged to provide constant information, the punches of a second group being selectable by means of a perforated pattern 37 and the punches of the third group being selectable by means of a stepping mechanism. The punches co-operate with a die-plate 1 which is slidably mounted on guide pins 5 secured to a frame 4. A space for the reception of the punch card is provided between the die and a guide-plate 2 which is slidable on the pins 5 against the action of springs 14. A plate 6 is secured to the frame and is formed, in the area thereof above the first and second groups of punches, with a space into which a solid and a perforated plate may be fitted. The solid plate is positioned above the first group of punches so that at every punching operation a hole is pierced by these punches. The perforated plate is located above the second group so that only those punches not in line with a perforation in plate will pierce a hole in the card. The punches in the third group are selected by means of interposers 17 formed on toothed racks 18, one rack being located in a slot in the plate 6 for every column of ten punches in the third group. Each rack is moved, in order to bring the interposer 17 into line with the selected punch, by means of a pawl 22 connected by links 25, 27 to the armature of an electromagnet 28. The link 25 is pivoted on a fixed pin 24 so that at each energization of the solenoid, the pawl engages with a tooth on the rack and upon de-energization, the rack is moved one-tooth pitch by means of a spring 26; the rack is retained in this position by a locking element 20. When the interposer 17 on a rack reaches the last punch in a column, the end of the rack engages a switch 34 which energizes a second electromagnet 33 thereby releasing the locking element 20 via links 29, 31, 32 so that the rack returns to its starting position. A pair of electromagnets as described are associated with each rack in the third group of punches, the energization of the magnets being selectively controlled by a suitable counting device. The die is moved towards the punches by means of a parallel-linkage arrangement 41 to 47 actuated by means of an electromagnet 48.
