Abstract

1320979 Selective punching apparatus SIEMENS AG 13 Sept 1971 [28 Sept 1970] 425O7/71 Heading B4B A control arrangement for selecting a stepping feed or a fast feed for sheet-type or tape-type data carriers in card perforators of the kind in which each punch operating mechanism is provided with an interposer 5 arranged between a punch 3 and the perforator drive 1, 4 and pivotable by an individual control element 13 in order selectively to transfer the perforating motion to a punch wherein the control arrangement includes two devices substantially identical with the operating mechanism for the punches adapted respectively to provide stepping and fast feed for the carriers, each of the interposers 5, 5<SP>1</SP> of these devices being pivotable as required between the drive and an individual push rod 17, 18 and wherein when a push rod is actuated the associated feed mechanism is brought into engagement with the data carrier. Each interposer 5 is provided with a slot 7 located on a stationary pin 8 and a pin 11 adapted to engage with an inclined slot 10 formed in an element 9 pivoted on the pin 8; the element 9 is provided with an armature 13 forming the control element for co-operation with an electro-magnet 14. With the device in the position shown in Fig. 2, upon rotation of a cam 1, a lever 4 is pivoted so as to cause an end thereof to engage with the interposer 5 moving it downwardly to engage and actuate a punch 3. During the downward stroke of the interposer, due to the inclination of the slot 10 in the element 9, the latter is moved bringing the armature into contact with the magnet. If the electromagnet is energized at this time the element will remain in this position while the interposer is returned via a lever 15 actuated by a cam 2; due to the position of the slot 10, the interposer is moved out of alignment with the end of the lever 4 so that at the next cycle of the apparatus the punch 3 is inoperative. In order to feed the record carrier, i.e. card or tape, past the punches at different speeds depending upon whether the carrier has to be punched or not, a further pair of levers 4, interposers 5, elements 9 and electromagnets 14 are provided in the apparatus, the levers 4 being operated by the cam 1 in synchronism with the lever 4 operating the punches. Instead of the additional pair of interposers 5, 5<SP>1</SP> acting on the punches, they are arranged to engage the pushrods 17, 18, Fig. 4. The push rod 17 acts, via a spring 20 and plunger 19, on a lever 21 pivoted on a shaft 21; the lever carries two rollers 23, 24 for co-operation with either feed rollers 25, 26 respectively. During the punching mode of the apparatus the plunger 17 is urged downwardly by the interposer 5 so that the roller 23 engages with the smaller roller 25 which is adapted to effect a step-by-step feed during the punching mode; the plunger is locked in this position by a pivoted pawl 32 engaging with the side surface of the plunger 18, Fig. 5 (not shown). When the punching mode is finished and it is required to feed the data carrier at a fast speed, the appropriate magnet 14 is energized causing the plunger 18 to rise under the action of a spring 30 thereby releasing the plunger 17 so that the roller 23 disengages the feed roller 25; the lever 21 is then pivoted by a spring 27 to cause the roller 24 to engage with the larger roller 26 which effects a fast feed.
