[Also in Groups VIII and XXXV] A perforating machine for punching perforations in a sheet, record card or tape comprises in the Fig. 1 embodiment a plurality of punches 42 each driven by a respective, electromagnet having a fixed field-core and a movable armature 40, and a corresponding plurality of mechanisms 43 ... 48 each comprising a compressible resilient member operable, upon-movement of the armature when the electromagnet is energized, to transmit a driving force from the armature to the associated punch; the resilient member is so constructed that when a predetermined resistance is set up to movement of the punch during closing of the air gap of the electromagnet the energy supplied by the latter is stored at least partially by compression of the member and that when the resistance decreases at or near the end of the armature movement, due to the punch having perforated the sheet or tape, the member expands and transfers to the punch the energy stored previously during the armature movement. As shown, the resilient member comprises a spring 43 compressed between a collar 45 fast with the punch 42 and an end 47 of a hollow cylinder 44; an abutment 46 limits compression of the spring 43, and a spring 49 returns to the rest position the armature and punch upon de-energization of the electromagnet. The abutment 46 may be omitted if the spring 43 after a predetermined compression has its turns contiguous to transmit directly the armature force. In the embodiments of Figs. 4 and 6 the resilient member is instead extensible, comprising springs, 95, 100, respectively tensioned between the armature 91 and a pivoted lever 86, and two pivoted levers 102, 104; limitation of the spring's extension is provided by an armature pin 90 slidable in a slot 93 of a link 88b pivoted on the lever 86, and by engagement of a flange 114 of the lever 104 with a part 115 of the lever 102.
