A data punching device comprises cyclically operable driving means coupled through a plurality of linkages to a single punch element, the linkages being operable by the driving means at different points in each cycle thereof to actuate the punch element and being associated with means selectively positioned to render the linkages operative in succession, and means also being provided for restoring the punch element after each actuation. As shown, the linkages are in the form of pivotally mounted bell cranks 29, 34, arms 30, 35 of which are disposed to coact alternately with extensions 17, 18 of a pivotally mounted bail 15 which is rockable by means of a cam follower 6 associated with cams 4, 5 on a driving shaft 1. The other arms 31, 36 of the bell cranks are operatively connected to a punch element 40. The coaction of the extensions 17, 18 and the bell crank arms 30, 35 is effected through interposers 64, 65 which are hinged to armatures 59, 61 of selectively energizable electromagnets 55, 56 having permanent magnets 57, 58 disposed oppositely thereto. The interposers are retractable alternately by means of knock-off levers 21, 22 pivotally mounted on studs 19, 20 attached to the bail 15, the knockoff levers also being pivotally connected to links 24, 26 which are pivotally connected to a fixed stud 27. The punch element is restored after each actuation by means of an assembly comprising links 43, 45 and a pivotally mounted cam follower 49 associated with cams 2, 3 on the shaft 1.
