Abstract

877,915. Selective punching machines. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 31, 1958 [Dec. 31, 1957], No. 42257/58. Class 31 (2). A device for punching record cards in motion along a conveyer 12 comprises a pair of rotatable cylinders 3, 5 each carrying punches, e.g. 31, 33 or 32, 34, in radial bores 30, and magnets 26, 28 which are selectively energized to actuate the corresponding punches. The magnets are connected to commutators 19, 20 the brush contacts 15, 16 of which are displaced angularly relatively to each other so that the actuation of the associated punches occurs at different times. As a result, punches 31, 32, for example, produce perforations of complementary form which intersect to form a punched hole. The segments SU and SL of the commutators are connected to storage devices comprising condensers CU 1 to CU 12 and CL 1 to CL 12 which are connected to conductors L l to L 12 through rectifiers RU 1 to RU 12 and RL l to RL 12 . The magnets may be replaced by mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic means.
