[Class 31(ii)] In a machine for punching code signals in a tape for subsequent use in a code translating device such as a reading machine, the code signals are formed in a tape 26 which is first embossed to form protrusions 30, Fig. 3, which mesh with apertures 28 in the tape-carrying drum 20, so that accurate feed of the tape 26 is effected by engagement of the protrusions 30 with the apertures 28 both in the punching-machine and in the reading or decoding machine. Two rows of punches 13 are used, and the punches are depressed against the action of springs 14 by arms 15 attached to the armatures of electromagnets 16, one of which only is shown on Fig. 1. The tape 26 is guided by side guides 27, and the drum 20 is rotated by a ratchet 22 operated by a pawl 25 controlled by the armature of an electro-magnet 23. The punches 13 are formed with conical ends which engage funnel-shaped mouths in the apertures 28. The conical ends of the punches are truncated to provide a cutting edge. The reading-machine is provided with a feed drum which is similar to the drum 20, so that the perforated web is fed accurately thereby.
