Abstract

540,612. Telegraphy. CREED & CO., Ltd. April 19, 1940, No. 7098. Convention date, May 20, 1939. [Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Groups VIII and XVI] A telegraph tape has "lidded apertures ", i.e. partially severed embossed portions, 125, Figs, 8, 9, punched therein in accordance with a code ; the partially severed portions overlie the corresponding perforations so that a message may be printed on the same tape as shown in Fig. 7. Punching mechanism. - The die plate 105, Figs. 4, 5, 6 has a portion sheared off so as to leave the punched-out part attached to the main tape. Spring-loaded ejectors 109, Fig. 5, carried by the die plate, bring the " lids " 125 substantially into the plane of the tape to facilitate the feed of the tape between successive punching operations, additional means being provided for guiding the lids to facilitate reverse movement of the tape. Interponents 68, Fig. 4, selected by the combination mechanism of a printing telegraph receiver, or in known manner by the keys of a perforator, are moved by cam mechanism, Fig. 4, or by an electromagnet Fig. 16 (not shown) to force the selected punches 73 through the tape. A spring- pressed stripper member 102 and guide plate 98 are provided. The cradle 69 has a projection co-operating with a feed-hole punch to invariably perforate a feed hole at each operation. The feed-hole punch is slightly shorter than the code punches. A modified form of ejector is described, Figs. 14, 15 (not shown). Printing telegraph receiver.-The semicircular combination code bars 16, Fig. 1, set by a signle magnet 17 and known " sword-and-T " mechanism, select actuating bars 14 connected to the type bars 12 by gear and rack. The selected code bars 16 operate the corresponding interponents of the punching mechanism through bell-crank levers 56, vertical levers 58 pivoted at 59, bell-crank levers 61 pivoted at 62, and bell-crank levers 65 pivoted at 66. The platen 11, Fig. 4, is in the form of a cylindrical plunger fitting loosely in a block 99 and has a resilient printing surface so that it vibrates and rotates slightly at each printing stroke. The block 99 is slidably mounted on a shaft 100 so that it can be moved into " letters " or " figures " position by selecting special actuating bars by appropriate code signals. Specifications 274,448, [Class 40 (iii)], and 358,737 are referred to.
