Abstract

562,551. Telegraphy. TELETYPE CORPORATION. Oct. 2, 1942, No. 13846. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1941. [Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Group VIII] In an automatic telegraph transmitter, the perforations in the tape are sensed and control the selection of a transmission channel and also a transmitting distributer'which effects the transmission of signals over the selected channel. The invention is described as applied to a printing telegraph system having a printerreperforator combined with the perforated-tape sensing-device. Printer-reperforator.-This resembles closely the instrument described in Specifications 540,612, 659,731 and 561,148, the notched code bars 27, Fig. 2, being set selectively by a selector mechanism 28 of the sword and T-lever type described in Specification 245,149, [Class 40 (iii)]. The selected pull-bar 26 is caused by the printing bail 37 to operate the corresponding type-bar to print the selected character. The code bars 27 through levers 46, 52, 56 operate corresponding interponents 58 of the perforating mechanism, the selected punches 66 being operated by a cam-controlled cradle 62. The punch block 67, Fig. 6, has a die-plate 72 to produce a " lidded " aperture as in Specification 540,612 by a shearing operation. The construction of the punching and stripping mechanism, and also of the tape feed mechanism is similar to but not identical with that described in Specifications 559,731 and 561,148. Sensing unit of the automatic transmitter.- This is substantially identical with that described in Specification 561,148, the signals in the tape controlling the setting of one or more of the five Y-levers 182. Setting of sliding members 291 by the Y- levers 182.-The five sliding members 291, which control the cam-distributer transmitter and the selection of the transmission channel, are set by pivoted T-shaped members 283 carried by a pivotally-mounted cam-controlled frame 280, projections on the members 283, when moved to the right, engaging the upper or lower parts of the Y-levers 182, the settings of which are thus transferred simultaneously to the sliding members 291. Projections 298 on the members 291, in their upper position, engage cam surfaces 309 on pivoted members 301, which, when moved to the left, shift the movable springs of sets of springs 362 controlling contacts 303 ... 307, Fig. 9. Control of cam-distributer transmitters.- The contacts a of springs 303 ... 307 are connected in series with contacts 1 ... 5 closed in turn by a cam-distributer 18, Fig. 2, of known type, thus transmitting code signals determined by the setting of the members 291. In a modified transmitter, projections on the members 291 mechanically block or unblock contactmaking levers of the cam distributer, Fig. 3 (not shown). Selection of transmission channel.-Additional contacts b, c, d of the sets of springs 303 ... 307 may be so connected as to select one of a number of transmission channels according to the setting of the members 291, i.e. in accordance with the perforations in the tape, means being provided whereby the selected circuit is only closed in response to a predetermined sequence of signal combinations which does not occur in normal signalling. Specification 531,337 also is referred to.
