Abstract

998,698. Clutch control. R. A. BUTLER. Sept. 28, 1961 [Sept. 28, 1960; Jan. 16, 1961], No. 34319/61. Headings F2C and F2L. [Also in Division B6] A clutch is used to impart a single revolution to cams 42 and 44 of web-splicing apparatus (see Division B6). As shown, the clutch comprises a constant speed gear-wheel 46, Fig. 1, freely mounted on a cam-shaft 14, and a disc 50 fixedly mounted to the cam-shaft 14. A pin 54 is constantly urged toward the gear 46 by a spring 56 screwed to the disc 50 in a hole 60. A wedge 72 on the end of an armature 74 of a solenoid 76 normally engages the underside of a head 78 of the pin 54 to hold the pin out of engagement with a slot 48 in the gear 46. The solenoid is energized by the closure of either the switch 28 or 30 actuated by a feeler lever 24 or 26 (see Division B6) completing the circuit through the solenoid, Fig. 7. The wedge 72 moves back, allowing the pin 54 to engage the slot 48. After one revolution of the clutch, and therefore of the cams 42 and 44, an additional cam 112 on the cam 44 operates a mechanism 114 which opens the switch 106 in the solenoid circuit. The wedge 72 therefore returns to its original position, disengaging the pin 54 from the slot 48.
