When the chain l is pulled, a sleeve h working in an annular chamber e is lifted out of mercury g in the chamber. Later in the upward movement of the part h, a shoulder h<1> meets the head p of a stem n attached to a disk m, and the disk is raised off its seat on the. end of the branch pipe. Water then enters the pipe, and the cistern is discharged. In a modified form, the siphon is dispensed with. To prevent waste of water if the chain is held down, a casing q containing a spring r may be attached to the pull-lever by a rod s. The casing slides on the rod and rests on the spring, which is supported by a disk t. The rod passes through a loop attached to the lever. When the chain is pulled, the top of the casing q strikes the rod b and closes the inlet valve.
