18,580. Levi, L. Sept. 14. Lift valves; closing, retarding.-Relates to flush valves for water-closets. When the closet seat B<1> is depressed, a shoe G<4> pivoted in a forked lug G<3>, Fig. 4, attached to the seat passes over a projection F<2> on a ring F<1> encircling the flush pipe A<1> and pivoted at E<4>. The end of the fork in the piece G<3> is inclined, so that, when the seat is raised by the action of a spring B<4>, the shoe does not yield, and the ring is turned on its pivot, bringing an entension F into contact with the spindle E of a piston E'. This engages the end of the spindle D<2> of a valve D, which then opens and permits the passage of a flush. Simultaneously, a vane J, carried by a stem H<6> of a float H<8> working in a cylinder H, descends into a transverse slot D<3> in the spindle and holds the valve open until disengaged by the rising of the float, which is effected by water entering the cylinder through a regulable passage H<4> and subsequently passing out by a pipe H<9> into the basin.
