Abstract

10,549. Maeers, E. D. May 7. Water-waste preventers, s i p h o n - discharge. The siphon is provided with a valve adapted to admit sufficient water into the long arm to start a flush, the valve being operated by a piston which is raised by admitting water from a pipe connected to a water supply and provided with a spring-push or other valve. The long arm c, Fig. 1, of the siphon has a branch provided with a valve seating e and a valve f, the spindle of which is guided in a bracket 18 and connected to a. pistop h in a cylinder i, the lower end of which is connected to the water supply by a pipe k provided with a spring-push or other valve l, controlled by a weighted handle or otherwise. When the valve l is opened, the piston h is raised and the valve f opened, thus introducing water into the long arm c of the siphon and starting a flush. In a modification, the water to start the flush is supplied from a closed chamber placed on the top of the siphon and filled with water by a branch of the service pipe. The valve is of a similar construction, but its spindle is longer and passes up the long arm of the siphon. In a further modification, shown in Fig. 4, the cistern is closed, and filled direct by a pipe y, without a ball cock. The air escapes by a float valve 1, which closes when the cistern is full. The long arm of the siphon has a branch or chamber 7 communicating with the cistern by the pipe 13. The piston valve consis of a block 11 which, when the valve x is opened, is raised by the water passing through the pipe 12, until the port 10 registers with the pipe n. Perforations 14, 15 in the block allow the water under it to escape when it falls into place again. The valve x is controlled by the weighted handle p and is so arranged that, when the handle p is down, communication is made between the pipes k,' y, but, when it is raised, the pipe y is out off and the pipe k is put into communication with the pipe 12.
