Abstract
684,203. Valve-discharge water-waste preventers. BARLING, L. C., and BEITH, G. R. Dec. 7, 1950 [May 26, 1950]. No. 29989/50. Class 26. [Also in Group XXIX]. In a mechanism for automatically and intermittently operating the outlet or flushing valve of a cistern to which liquid is continuously supplied, with the cistern 3 empty, water flows in via pipe 5 but the float 7, counterbalanced by a weight 13, is held submerged at the bottom of the cistern by a roller 16 on the float lever 8, 9 engaging in a notch 35 in a non-counterbalanced lever 29 carrying a lift member, e.g. a bell or float 31, both levers being pivoted respectively at 10 and 30 on a fixed bracket 11. When the water reaches level a, the member 31 lifts and disengages the roller so that the float 7 rises after taking up a small amount of lost motion, the float arm 8 abuts the head 27 of a link 19 and opens the discharge valve 23 carried by a lever 21. As the water level falls the member 31 and float 7 fall until a trigger 33a engages a step 21a on the lever 21 and holds the valve open. The arm 8 continues to descend the link sliding through a hole in the arm, until the roller re-engages the notch and releases the trigger to allow the valve to close.
