Abstract
693,410. Water - waste - preventing cisterns. MEIK, O. A. Sept. 10, 1951, No. 21289/51. Class 26 In a water-waste-preventing cistern, a valve member in the form of a cylinder 9 open at its top is constrained to move vertically above the outlet 7 by lugs 9a engaging guides 9b, and a counter-weight 16 retains it in the raised position until the water level falls below the valve member. In operation, turning of the handle 17 rotates the spindle 12 which both raises the valve member 9 through the crank and pin arrangement 11 and 10a, and also turns the counterweight rigidly attached to it into a position where the torque it exerts on the spindle is sufficient to retain the valve member in its raised position. When the water level falls, the effective weight of the valve member increases and it returns and closes the outlet. The rod 10 is made hollow to reduce noise by admitting air to the discharge pipe after the outlet is closed. The tank is refilled by a known ball-valve arrangement.
