Abstract

1422764 IC engine cylinder head GENERAL MOTORS CORP 10 April 1974 [23 April 1973] 15876/74 Heading F1B A cast cylinder head 10 has spaced upper and lower walls 20 and 22 connected by walls 26 and 28 to define a coolant chamber 30 and walls 36a to d and 38a to d extend upwardly from exhaust ports in the lower wall into the coolant chamber. The walls 36a to d and 38a to d are intersected by an intermediate wall 54, 55, 56 so as to define upper and lower coolant chamber sections. Connecting walls 58, 59, 60 and 61 extending between the walls 20 and 22 and intersecting the walls 36a to d and 38a to d define sub-chambers of the lower coolant chamber section. The sub-chamber defined between the walls 22, 36c, 36d, 38a, 38b, 58 and 59 and a portion of the intermediate wall is in communication with openings 63 in the wall 22 through openings in the walls 58 and 59. The openings 63 also communicate with the coolant chamber upper section through apertures in the intermediate wall. Tubular inserts 18 placed in the openings 63 close the apertures in the intermediate wall and have openings 68 and 69 for the passage of coolant through the openings 63 to the subchamber. Tubular inserts 16 placed in openings 64 in the wall 22 have openings 66 for the passage of coolant to the sub-chamber defined between the head end wall 28, the walls 22, 36a and 36b and the portion 54 of intermediate wall. Coolant from the sub-chambers flows between the walls 36a-d and 38a-d, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1, and to the upper coolant chamber section which has a coolant outlet. Injector receiving tubes 14 extending through the upper, lower and intermediate walls are cooled by the coolant flow.
