Abstract

142,163. Christopher, J. E. Dec. 30, 1918. Retort furnaces.-A retort for the distillation of coal, oil shales, &c. is formed with a main external heating-flue B from which the gases, controlled by dampers G, H, pass to one of two auxiliary series of flues or regenerative sections E, F, further heating the retort. The sections E, F may be filled with heat-retaining material, such as bricks, and steam may be passed through each of them, alternately with the waste gases from ports P, Q. After superheating, the steam passes through a port M, controlled by a damper J, to a vertical passage L leading to a chamber K, and enters the retort through passages O. The dampers G, H, J and a two-way cock controlling the steam supply to the ports P, Q may be connected for simultaneous operation.
