Abstract

1421261 Chromating steel surfaces NIPPON STEEL CORP 3 May 1973 [4 May 1972 20 March 1973] 21065/73 Heading C7U A steel surface to be subsequently lacquered is contacted with a solution containing 5 to 150g. chromic acid, 5 to 200 g./l. oxide sol, e.g. alumina or silica, and 5 to 100 g./l. of one or more of nitrate, acetate, carbonate or a hydroxide of a transition metal; borax; molybdate; and tungstate, and then heating to 400‹C or more. The nitrate may be Ni, Cr, Cu, the molybdate or tungstate an ammonium salt, the carbonate Ni or Cu, and hydroxide Ni or Zn. The surface may be electrolytically cleaned and the steel may be annealed and temper rolled after chromating.
