Abstract

1361101 Protective coatings for ferrous metals STANDARD PRESSED STEEL CO 26 May 1972 [2 June 1971] 24897/72 Heading C7U A ferrous metal is coated with a more noble metal and then this is coated with a layer formed by drying and heat-curing to water-insolubility a composition comprising Al powder in an aqueous solution containing a chromate ion and/or a molybdate ion, and also a phosphate ion and a metallic ion. The substrate, e.g. a jet engine component or fastener for aerospace applications may be of stainless steel or high-alloy steel, cleaned by blasting with Al 2 O 3 , and is coated by electro-plating or vacuum deposition with Sn, Ta, Ti, Cu, Ag, Au, Pd or Pt, or preferably Ni or Co, to a thickness of 0À1 to 0À4 mil; Ni may be electro-plated from a sulphamate bath and the deposit heated at 375‹ F for 2 to 24 hours to drive off H 2 . The treating solution may contain 10- 2000 g/l Al powder, at least 1 mol/litre phosphate, at least 0À3 mol/l chromate or molybdate, and at least 0À5 mol/l metal ion, e.g. Mg. Zn, Al, Fe, Ca, Li, Na, or Ag, and is applied by spraying, optionally dried slowly at 150-200‹ F for 10-20 minutes, and is cured for 24 hours at 375‹ F, or at 500 to 1000‹ F for at least 15 minutes. The coating may be post-heated at 850‹ F-1000‹ F for 1¢ hours or more, or may be worked mechanically as by glass-bead blasting or wire-wheel burnishing.
