Abstract

An anodizing bath for coating zinc and zincbase alloy surfaces consists of an aqueous solution of pH 11-13 containing 0.2-2 mol/1. silicate anion, calculated as SiO3, 0.05-1.5 mol/1. chromate, vanadate, permanganate, molybdate and/or tungstate anions, calculated as CrO4, VO3, MnO4, MoO4 or WO4, and a Na and/or K cation. Alternating current is used for electrolysing using at least one electrode having exposed surfaces formed of Zn or Zn alloy, wherein the current density may be initially 350-1000 ASF until the formation of a film, probably ZnO, is initiated, then reduced to 100-300 ASF, electrolysis continuing until the voltage rises to a terminating value of 55-250 volts with deposition of the anions. To avoid the use of a high current density, the surfaces may be pretreated by applying a thin coat thereto using the process of Specification 876,127 or by applying a phosphate coating by spraying or immersion.
