Pile or nap, raising and dressing; calendering; processes, compound.-Relates to apparatus for finishing velvets and the like, and consists in submitting the fabric, after being damped, to the action of heated card cylinders, then to a calender, then again to the action of card cylinders, and then to expanding means, the operat i o n being repeated as desired. The fabric first passes over damping - rollers 4, 5 in a bath 3, or between same and under a roll 6 in the liquid. A pressure roll 7, mounted on weighted levers 9, contacts with roller 5. From the roller 5, the fabric passes in front of an aspirator 11 to a pair of card cylinders 13, 14, with steel teeth, mounted in adjustable bearings in slides 15, 16, carrying fabric-supporting rollers 17, 18 and situated above a gas furnace 21. A calender consisting of a hollow cylinder 23, with internal burners and mounted on an adjustable pivoted support 24, is arranged between the cylinders 13, 14 and a second similar pair 29, 30 with reversed teeth, from which the fabric passes to guide-rollers 32, 33, the first of which is driven from the driving-shaft 41. Where the fabric is to be treated several times its ends are fastened together and it is piled on the table 43, from which it passes over a stretching-frame 44, the inclination of which is varied bv a hand-wheel 49 through a worm-wheel 45 and worm 46, and then over guide-rollers 50, 51 to the rollers 4, 5. The guide-rollers may be arranged to stretch the fabric transversely.
