Abstract

700,413. Finishing fabrics. BLEACHERS' ASSOCIATION, Ltd., and MELVILLE, A. Nov. 28, 1951 [Dec. 1, 1950], No. 29417/50. Class 42 (1) Fabrics are treated by compressively shrinking the selvedge portions only, leaving the remainder unshrunk, and then subjecting them across their whole width to weft-wise tension on a stenter. " Compressively shrinking " is defined as shrinking in length by the application of lengthwise compression and superficial restraint. Independent compressive shrinking heads may be supported on brackets 18 bolted to each of the chain frames 16 of a stenter, the distance between the frames 16 being adjustable. Each shrinking head comprises a bearing support 19, in a sleeve in which is journalled the spindle 21 of a roller 20. A second roller 23 is mounted on a spindle 24 which is journalled in a bearing block 25 slidablv mounted in a slot 19d in the support 19, and adjustable by a nut 28. A belt 29 of rubber, felt or other suitable material passes around the rollers 20 and 23, and an upper roller 30, the spindle 31 of which is journalled in a bearing block 32, which slides in a slot 19e in the plate 19, and is adjustable by a handwheel 33, presses against the upper portion of the belt 29. The roller 30 is caused to rotate bv a chain drive from an electric motor 36. The selvedges of the fabric 45 are fed between the belt 29 and roller 30 and then, after passing over a roller 40, which extends the whole width of the fabric, are engaged by the clips 13 of the stenter chains. Electrical means are provided for synchronizing the speeds of the motors 36, which may, however, also be varied to effect weft straightening. The degree of compressive shrinking applied to the selvedges may be adjusted independently by the handwheels 33. Steam or water may be applied to the fabric to assist shrinking, while undergoing weftwise tension on the stenter, and the fabric may be damped, impregnated with chemicals or dyestuffs or otherwise treated before being passed to the shrinking heads. Specifications 359,759, 371,976, 372,803 and 529,579 are referred to.
