Abstract

1414811 Heating charge SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 2 Feb 1973 [4 Feb 1972] 5327/72 Heading F1B In a method of supplying a liquified hydrocarbon fuel to an I.C. engine the fuel is vapourized by heat from the engine inlet air, mixed with the inlet and the resulting fuel/air mixture is supplied to the engine. A vacuum-insulated tank (1), Fig. 1 (not shown) with a relief valve (2) supplies vapour/gas (L.N.G.) and liquid respectively through valves (3, 4) solenoid-operated from the ignition system to an off-take valve (5) and thence via a pressurereduction valve (6) to a heat exchanger 7 with engine intake air as the heat exchange medium. Fuel vapour/gas flows from heat exchanger 7 via conduit 8 to gas carburetter 9 for mixing with air from intake 10. The off-take 5 has inlets 16, 17, Fig. 2 respectively supplied with vapour/gas and liquid and an outlet 18. Vapour/gas from tank 1 passes via inlet 44 into space 40 and its pressure compresses the inter-connected bellows 37 and 36. Air in space 41 is vented via channel 45. Since chamber 42 is connected to space 23 the pressure in chamber 42 is equal to the pressure of vapour/ gas or liquid flowing through chamber 23. With valve 20 in the position shown in which liquid flows into space 23 via inlet 17 and groove 26 and a significant vapour/gas-pressure exists in tank 1 and therefore in space 40, the differential forces arising on bellows 37, 36 moves the valve member 20 against spring 31 to connect space 23 to the vapour/gas inlet 16. Since the pressures in spaces 23 and 40 then equalize the valve member 20 tends to return to the Fig. 2 position and takes up a position in which either vapour/gas or liquid or a mixture of both flows out via outlet 18. The heat exchanger may include a fuel header tank and an expansion tank in an air duct which has a drain pipe for condensation. Alternatively the heat exchanger may be incorporated within an air filter (69), Fig. 3c (not shown).
