Abstract

1411471 Tubular heat exchangers; steam generators CLARKE CHAPMAN Ltd 20 Dec 1973 [6 Jan 1973] 904/73 Headings F4S and F4A In a shell and tube heat exchanger wherein a first fluid, e.g. preheated feedwater, is passed through a plurality of tubes (not shown), in a shroud 44 within the shell 10 to heat exchange with a second fluid, e.g. hot waste gas, which, on entering through an inlet 16, flows over the tubes and then through the space between the shroud and the shell before leaving through an outlet 70, an adjustable rotary valve assembly 74 is provided for varying the proportion of second fluid by-passing the tubes through sector-shaped openings 72 located in the shroud 44 upstream of the tubes. The main fluid stream and the bypass stream mix together in the valve assembly before leaving the outlet 70 through a side opening 94. The valve assembly, which is located within a gas duct 80, comprises a pair of similarly apertured circular plates 82 and 86 interconnected by narrow spaced apart circumferentially disposed plates 84 and mounted on a shaft 78 rotatable by a handle 76. Spaced openings 88 in the duct 80 overlie the narrow plates 84, and an annular plate 90 blanks off the space between duct 80 and outlet 70. The outlet ports 92 in the duct 80 spaced apart 180 degrees are aligned with the opening 94 leading from the outlet. The apertures in the plate 82 are also sector-shaped and are movable into and out of alignment with the openings 72 by rotating shaft 78.
