Abstract

Acrolein is obtained by heating glycerine with a bisulphate, which may be mixed with a neutral sulphate; preferably a mixture of potassium bisulphate and sulphate is employed. The process is made continuous by allowing fresh glycerine to flow on to the dehydrating material. The distillate is fractionated and the acrolein fraction is neutralized, e.g. by an alkali or alkaline-earth carbonate or bicarbonate. It may further be dried, e.g. by calcium chloride or sodium sulphate.
