Abstract
a -Chloroacrolein is prepared by distilling an aqueous solution, containing free inorganic acid, of a - chloro - b - hydroxy - propionaldehyde. In example 1, chlorine is passed through an aqueous solution of acrolein at 10 DEG C. until a persistent yellow green colour is obtained. The excess chlorine is destroyed by means of sulphur dioxide and the a -chloro-b -hydroxy propionaldehyde salted out with sodium sulphate. The remaining solution which contains mineral acid and some of the aldehyde is steam distilled and a -chloroacrolein is obtained. In example 2, the yield of a -chloroacrolein obtained by merely steam distilling the dilute solution of a -chloro-b -hydroxy propionaldehyde prepared as above, is compared with that obtained when the solution is treated by one of the following methods before distillation: (a) adding more hydrochloric acid; (b) neutralising the solution; (c) extracting the aldehyde and diluting it with water; (d) adding sulphuric acid to a solution obtained as (c); (e) carrying out the chlorination in the presence of excess calcium carbonate and distilling the resultant solution. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 573,720.
