Abstract

1406695 Extruding; making composite plugs COMITATO NAZIONALE PER L'ENERGIE NUCLEARE 22 Dec 1972 [28 Dec 1971] 59388/72 Headings B3P and B3A A composite metal article is made by extruding a composite billet enclosed in an evacuated casing, cutting the extruded product into discrete lengths 10, Fig. 5b, and machining the cut-off length at one end to expose the core metal 1. The extruded product is machined before cutting to remove the casing and expose the outer metal 2. The billet components are cleaned before assembly and may comprise two or more metals. In one arrangement the core is stainless steel and the outer metal is a zirconium alloy or vice versa. The casing is made of copper. The billet is heated to 800‹ to 900‹ C. before extrusion. The harder metal component of the billet has teeth (5), Fig. 2 (not shown), to break the oxide layer of the other component during extrusion. The composite article may be a plug used to connect a stainless steel header plate to a zirconium fuel tube of a reactor. The plug may be drilled to provide a blind or through bore.
