Abstract
968,520. Extruding; working at specified temperatures. E. DURRWACHTER, and E. BOSCH. April 13, 1962 [May 15, 1961], No. 14306/62. Headings B3P and B3V. In the hot extrusion of pre-sintered blanks 4, the blank is surrounded during heating and extrusion by a protective coating 5 to exclude oxygen. The blank may be a combination of sintered tungsten-copper, silver-molybdenum, silver-nickel or silver-graphite; the extruded product is preferably used in the manufacture of electric contacts. Coating 5 may be a layer of brass foil for extrusion temperatures up to 800 ‹ C., a layer of copper foil for extrusion temperatures between 800-1000‹ C. and a layer of iron foil for temperatures above 1000‹ C. The press ram 2 has a concave head 3 of smaller diameter than the blank whereby after extrusion, Fig. 5 (not shown), substantially the whole of the coating remains in the discard; a small portion of coating in front of the extruded product may be removed by wire brushing. A shielding gas for the extruded product is admitted at 12 into a bush 11 and a cooling water spray 13 is provided. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the layer of foil is in two parts and after heating the covered blank in a furnace, the lower part is detached before introducing the blank into the billet container. This prevents any part of the coating being present at the front of the extruded product. Alternatively the coating may be of graphite and/or magnesium or aluminium oxide, possibly with an addition of titanium oxide, which oxides may be mixed with water-glass into a paste and baked on to the blank. A combination of a non-metallic coating and a foil wrapping may be used.
