Abstract
1,156,540. Making composite wire. NATIONAL STANDARD CO. 24 Jan., 1967, No. 3461/67. Heading B3A. [Also in Division E1] A method of making aluminium-clad ferrous wire comprises coating a ferrous wire with either copper or nickel and extruding the aluminium on to the wire at a pressure and temperature sufficient to effect a recrystallization of the copper or nickel, all the metals remaining in the solid state throughout and the aluminium remaining unalloyed with any of the other metals. The wire is copper or nickel plated in any conventional manner and is pulled through the extruding die. An aluminium slug or billet is heated to 1000‹ F. and is extruded concentrically on to the plated wire under a pressure of at least 50,000 lb/sq. inch. A satisfactory bond may be obtained on a tarnished copper or nickel surface at an extrusion pressure of 70,000 1b/sq. inch.
