Abstract

1456808 Extrusion; producing conductor rails or girders SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 24 March 1975 [23 March 1974] 12101/75 Headings B3P and B3A A composite extrusion with at least two inserts 48 is made by extruding a matrix metal, e.g. aluminium, through a die and introducing the inserts on each side of the extrusion axis. The inserts may be steel or copper which can be coated, e.g. with zinc, to prevent corrosion. The extruded composite is machined to expose the inserts to provide a conductor rail. Alternatively the composite can be a girder. The extrusion die is formed of an entry plate 1, a mandrel plate 2 and a die plate 3. Holes 9 in the entry plate are used to feed the inserts to passages defined by grooves 13 in the mandrel plate and the entry plate surface. The grooves lead to tubular outlets 18 extending into a chamber (30), Fig. 3 (not shown), in the die plate 3. The die opening 40 is defined by a lining 41 and a mandrel 20 on the mandrel plate.
