2 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures FIG SHEET 1 OF 2 PRESS FOR MANUFACTURING BIMETAL ENDLESS SHAPES MAINLY ALUMINUM COVERED STEEL WIRE This application is a continuation application of Ser. No. l35,7l6; filed Apr. 20, 1971.
The present invention relates to press equipment and more specifically it relates to presses for manufacturing bimetal endless shapes, mainly aluminum-covered steel wire.
In the latter case singleand double-ram presses are used in which the press tools including a die and a man drel, are located in the container body and heated together with the latter. The rams of these presses are set square to the container and to the press tools which are coaxial with said container. The covering layer of metal is pressed on the blank by extruding aluminium from the ingot located in the heated container by means of one or two rams, through a circular gap between the die and the mandrel; the blank is fed through the hole in the mandrel.
In cases of wire manufacture by metal spraying and pressing, the minimum attainable diameter of wire is, as a rule, ID to [2 mm.
For obtaining smaller diameters, an additional operation is resorted to, i.e., drawing of wire. However, even with such an arrangement the smallest attainable diameter is 4.3 mm because numerous reductions caused by drawing result in breaking of the outer layer. This is particularly conspicuous in the wire produced by pressing in the above-quoted presses. This is attributable to the fact that the rams set at an angle to the direction of extrusion through the circular gap cause considerable variations in the thrickness ofthe pressed-on layer. The employment of two rams in, the press, moving towards each other fails to remedy these thickness variations but complicates the press design considerably: opera tion of two rams calls for the provision of synchronization system intended to control the ram speeds; besides, the double-ram presses require two heating systems which increases the floor area of the press.
Also known in the art are presses wherein the ram is arranged coaxially with the container and the press tools (see. for example, US. Pat. No. 887,789, Cl.7b Gr 11. Federal Republic of Germany). These presses are designed, in the main, for applying shells to largediameter cables (not under 30 mm) and are similarly incapable ofsolving the problem of manufacturing small-diameter bimetal wire.
An object of the invention resides in eliminating the aforesaid disadvantages.
The main object of the invention is to provide a press whose design would make it possible to control the heating of the die and mandrel independently of the container.
This object is carried in effect by providing a press for manufacturing bimetal endless shapes, mainly aluminium-covered steel wire, by pressing a layer of metal on the blank, this metal being extruded from a heated container through a circular gap between the die and mandrel, the latter having a hole for the was sage of the blank, the metal being extruded by a ram located coaxially with the die and mandrel in which, according to the invention, the die and mandrel are installed consecutively after the container and provided with controllable heaters of their own.
Such a design of the press allows the manufacture of wire with diameters down to 1.7 mm with practically uniform thickness of the covering layer.
Now the invention will be described in detail by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a sectionalized view of the press for manufacturing aluminiumcovered steel wire according to the invention;
FIG. 2 is a section taken along line Il-Il in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a sectionalized view of the press tools including a die and a mandrel.
The press comprises a container I (FIGS. I, 2) for the aluminium ingot, located in a container holder 2 which is connected by rods 3 (FIG. 2) with hydraulic cylinders 4 (FIGS. 1, 2) installed on the press frame 5. The container is provided with heaters 6. Installed after the container 1 are press tools 7 (FIGS. l 3) including a die 8 and a mandrel 9, both mounted on a carriage IO; the latter can be moved by a hydraulic cylinder 12 (FIG. 1) along transverse guides 11.
The carriage l0 mounts another set of press tools 13 similar to the first set and kept as a stand-by equipment if it becomes necessary to rapidly replace the press tools.
Each tool set is installed on a carriage 10 in the bushing I4 (FIGS. I 3) provided with a cover 15 where the mandrel is installed flush with the cover surface. The mandrel 9 has a central hole 16 intended for the passage of the blank.
The tool sets 7 and 13 are provided with independent controllable heaters I7. Besides, the press comprises a cylinder 18 carrying a ram 19 which is set coaxially with the container 1 and the press tools 7 (13).
In the course of manufacture of the aluminiumcovered steel wire, the steel core (blank) 20 is pushed through the hole 16 in the mandrel while the aluminium ingot 21 located in the heated container I is extruded by the ram 19 through the slotted gap 22 between the die and the mandrel. As a result, a layer of aluminium is pressed on the blank 20 and moves further together with it. This press can be used for manufacturing aluminiumcovered steel wire of various diameters, down to 1.7 mm. For producing wire of smaller or larger diameters it is necessary to change the degree of heating of the press tools and replace the press tools correspondingly.
For replacing the press tools, the carriage I0 must be shifted left or right along the guides II to the corresponding stops (not shown).
When the movement ofthe carriage I0 is completed, a new set of press tools is brought to the pressing position while the old set occupies a position for removal.
The tools can be replaced with out any preliminary work because the press tools 13 shifted to the removal position become readily accessible for disassembly.
The press claimed here can be used for manufacturing not the wire alone but any other shapes for which purpose it is sufficient to change the configuration of the working surfaces of the die and mandrel which form the extruding gap.
What we claim is:
l. A press for manufacturing bimetallic endless shapes, generally aluminum-covered steel wire, by pressing a layer of metal on a blank, comprising: a heated container for the material to be pressed on said blank; a pressing tool including a mandrel and a die having a hole for the passage of said blank therethrough said mandrel and die being consecutively lo eated after said container; a cover having said mandrel installed therein flush with the outer cover end surface; controllable heaters for said mandrel and die; a ram extending coaxially with said mandrel and die and adapted to effect extrusion of said material in said container through a slotted gap between said mandrel and
