1,168,467. Making composite wire; drawing. TREFILERIES LEON BEKAERT P.V.B.A. 22 Dec., 1966 [23 Dec., 1965], No. 57480/66. Headings B3A and B3P. A method of applying a non-ferrous metal overlay to a steel or steel alloy wire comprises the steps of assembling a loose-fitting sleeve of the overlay metal to the wire, cold-drawing the assembly through a first die which reduces the diameter of the sleeve, so that it is a close-fit on the wire, through a stabilizing die, the length of which is at least ten times greater than its bore diameter and which prevents the sleeve being stripped off the wire when it passed through a final die which simultaneously reduces both the sleeve and the wire to form a molecular bond between them. In an apparatus for carrying out the method the wire (or rod) 11 and the sleeve 14 are passed through first and second dies 15 and 16 and forwarded by feed rollers 17 and 18 to a stabilizing die 21. This die is of considerable length in relation to its diameter and in an example has a bore of 5À6 mm. and a length of 70 mm. In this example a lead sheath is applied to a steel core. The assembly is drawn through the final die 22 by the rollers 23 and 24 in which a reduction of each of the components of the assembly occurs, the reductions being in proportion to their individual hardnesses.
