Abstract

1406122 Load spreader for handling freight containers MIDLAND ROSS CORP 16 Jan 1973 [17 Jan 1972] 2255/73 Heading B8H Load spreader for handling freight containers is suspended from cables at one end at a point on the longitudinal axis and at the other end at two points equally spaced on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis. The cables are connected to the spreader by selectively extensible means whereby the spreader may be tilted about horizontal axes to accommodate pitch or roll of a ship being loaded or unloaded. In the illustrated embodiment the spreader comprises a slave pick-up unit 21 connected to a master support unit 20. A first suspension cable 26 is secured inside a horn 31 by an adjustable eye-bolt. The other two suspension cables 27, 28 are coupled to one end of respective hydraulic actuators 45, 46 the other ends of which are connected to the master support unit. A self-contained hydraulic system, mounted on the support unit, supplies fluid to the actuators to achieve the desired inclination of the spreader. In an alternative embodiment Fig. 5 (not shown) the one suspension cable 26 is replaced by a pair of cables (71), (72) located about the longitudinal axis and connected to a frame (78) connected to the master unit about a pivot axis extending parallel to but above, the longitudinal axis. The cables (71), (72) are secured to the frame by adjustable eye-bolts and the other two cables (73), (74) pass around respective pulleys (81), (82) before connection with hydraulic actuators (91), (92) secured by adjustable eye-bolts to the master unit. In a further embodiment Fig. 11 (not shown) a pair of master units (12), (14) support an extensible slave unit (11) and yet a further embodiment (not shown) to slave units are suspended from a master unit.
