Abstract
1403334 Marine vessel water intake I HIKITA 2 Nov 1973 [15 Dec 1972 17 May 1973] 51048/73 Heading B7S A cooling water intake for the engine cooling system of a marine vessel which uses sea water as the engine coolant comprises a block 3 having a throughbore, the block being secured in a hole 2 through the hull 1 of the vessel, an intake pipe 4 which is slidably inserted in the block 3 and is held therein by a pipe holding means 6, a strainer 5 carried at the outer end of the pipe 4 and a closing means 7 in the form of a shut-off plate 71 pivoted on a shaft 73a, which can be actuated to close the throughbore in the block 3 when the outer end of the pipe has been withdrawn sufficiently far inboard of the vessel. In this arrangement the pipe 4 which is connected by piping 40 to the engine may be withdrawn into the vessel for cleaning of the strainer 5. In its normal operating position the outer end of the pipe 4 projects beyond the block 3 and is held by the holding means 6 which comprises a ring 61b on the block 3 to which is secured by screws 61c a frame 61 carrying at its inboard end a coupling ring 61a in which is screwed a coupling pipe 62 mounted rotatably on but fixed axially with respect to the pipe 4. By rotating the handle 62b of the pipe 62 the pipe 4 may be withdrawn from the position shown and the shut-off plate 71 may then be pivoted by means of a handle 73b on its shaft 73a to close the throughbore in the block 3, a spring 73d round the shaft 73a and a packing 8c provided on the internal surface of a cover 721 preventing the entry of sea-water when the plate 71 is in this position. In a simplified embodiment the outboard end of the pipe 4 does not project beyond the block 3 so that the shutoff plate 71 may be actuated when desired, the pipe 4 in this case being retained in its working position by a screw-threaded collar.
