Abstract

1400681 Passivation of Zn and Cd ORDENA TRUDOVOGO KRASNOGO ZNAMENI INSTITUT KHIMII I KHIMCHESKOI TEKHNOLOGII AKADEMII NAUK LITOVSKOI SSR 16 Jan 1973 [5 April 1972] 2221/73 Heading C7U A passivating composition for zinc or cadmium comprises (dry mixture, weight parts; aqueous solution gms/l) (a) 1À7-70À0 (as Cr) of CrO 3 or a soluble chromate (b) 1À0-45À0 (as NO 3 ) of a soluble nitrate (c) 1À0-25À0 (as SO 4 ) of a soluble sulphate (d) 0À5-10À0 (as B) of a soluble boron compound and (e) 0À05-6À0 of where R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R4 are H, C 1 -C 8 alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl (each substituted or unsubstituted) and n is 1-5. The groups R 1 to R4 may be substituted by -OH, -OR, -COR, -COOH, -COOR, -CONH 2 , -CN, -NH 2 , -NHR, -NR 2 , where R is alkyl or aryl; a list of suitable acids (e) is given. Compounds (a) may be CrO 3 , chromates of NH4, Be, K, Cd, Li, Mg, Na or Zn and/or dichromates of NH 4 , Be, K, Cd, Li, Mg, Na or Zn, (b) may be nitrates of NH 4 , Be, K, Na, Cd, Li, Mg, Na and/or Zn, (c) may be sulphates of NH4, Be, K, Cd, Li, Mg, Na and/or Zn and/or bisulphates of NH 4 , K, Li, or Na and (d) may be boric acid, Mg orthoborate, or a polyborate of NH 4 , Be, K, Li, Mg, or Na, e.g. Na tetraborate. The pH of the aqueous solution is adjusted to 1À1 to 2À8 by addition of acid such as H 2 SO 4 or alkali such as NaOH, and the solution is used at 15-30‹C for 3-90 seconds to treat, e.g. steel coated with Zn or Cd electrolytically from a cyanide bath, or hotdip galvanized steel, or other Zn or Cd surfaces.
