Abstract
139,942. Smith, W. H. April 30, 1919. Jacks.-An hydraulic jack has the cylinder and ram formed from two artillery shells or the like of suitable calibres. The shell 2 is suitably adapted to serve as a ram working in another shell 1 adapted to serve as a cylinder. The cap 12 contains an auxiliary fluid-holding chamber 39 and supports the operating-lever 13 connected to the plunger 16. The lever 13 has a telescopic handle 23 adapted to engage a projection 25 on the cylinder to serve as a carrying-handle. A folding or other form of handle may be used. The lever 13 can be moved laterally to clear a stop 40, so that the normal downward movement of the plunger is exceeded, and a plate 30 on the plunger strikes and opens the release valve 29. The release valve has a shaped extension 45, Fig. 5, adapted to produce a slow initial and quick final release of the operating-fluid. A detachable foot 34 with antifriction rollers 35 is fitted on to lugs on the cap 12.
