Abstract

Rope grips.-Comprises a rope grip in which (1) a hand-lever first tightens the jaws on the rope, (2) the grip on the rope is increased by the load acting on an auxiliary lever, which may, however, be moved backwards without slackening the grip, and (3) the jaws may be completely released by the hand-lever. The jaws A are pivoted on a bolt B, and each carries a nut G pivoted on trunnions H and operated by screws E, F mounted on a common shaft D. The hand-lever P and screw F are fixed on the shaft, while the screw E is separately coupled to the shaft D and to the load-actuated lever L by lost-motion devices K, R respectively, so that (1) the hand-lever can rotate the sciew F, but not the screw E, to close the jaws, (2) the load lever can rotate the screw E to tighten the grip, but cannot rotate it in the opposite direction, and (3) the hand-lever can rotate both screws to release the grip. The grip may be automatically released by an arm V striking a stop. A pawl M is pivoted on the bolt B to engage with teeth on the screw F, so that when the load lever L is tightened, a projection N thereon locks the pawl against the teeth on the screw and prevents the release of the grip until the load lever is returned to its free position, as by the load overrunning the grip.
