Description

W. E. SWEARINGEN.
WRENCH FOR BATTERY TERMINALS.
' APPLICATION FILED APR. 28, 1921.

warren stares WALTER E. SWEARINGEN, or MONTGOMERY crTY, Mrssounn WRENCH FOR BATTERY CI.ERMINALS.
Application filed April 26, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER E. SWEAR INGEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Montgomery City, in
the county of Montgomery and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches for Battery Terminals, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and convenient tool for applying and removing battery terminals under conditions involving better convenience than can be secured by the use of a wrench of the ordinary form and with a view to utilizing the terminal block as a means of supporting the tool while the bolt is being turned; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side view partly in section of a wrench embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a section on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a face View of the wrench.
The tool consists essentially of a holding ring 10 having a perpendicularly disposed anchoring arm 11 provided in an inturned terminal 12 designed for engagement with a terminal block 13 of a battery box with which is engaged the usual terminal bolt 14:, a revoluble socket jaw 15 carrying a ratchet 16 and adapted to fit over the bolt head, and an operating ring 17 revolubly mounted within the holding ring and embracing the socket jaw and provided with a spring actuated pawl 18 for engagement with said ratchet, a suitable operating handle 19 being attached to the operating ring.
In applying the tool to a battery terminal for the purpose of removing or tightening a terminal bolt it is only necessary to fit the socket j aw over the head of the bolt and at the same time engage the finger 12 at the terminal of the anchoring arm 11 with the terminal block to dispose the device in such a re lation to the battery box as to enable the operator to oscillate the handle to advance the bolt in the desired direction. In the con- Speciiication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
Serial No. 464,611.
struction illustrated the arrangement of the ratchet teeth and dog are such as to adapt the tool only for loosening a terminal bolt, and it is for this purpose mainly that such a tool is required, owing to the fact that these bolts become more or less corroded and are diflicult to start by the use of an ordinary wrench, particularly when the operator must depend upon holding the box in position during the operation of the wrench.
Obviously as soon as the bolt has been started it may readily be unscrewed either with an ordinary wrench or by the fingers.
The anchoring arm serves to secure the holding ring against rotation regardless of the strain which may be applied to the operatmg lever.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A tool for the purpose described having a holding ring provided with a perpendicularly disposed anchoring arm for engagement with a battery terminal block, a socket aw and an operating ring revolubly mounted upon the holding ring and respectively carrying a ratchet and a dog for engagement therewith, an operating handle being connected with said operating ring.
2. A tool for the purpose described having independently revoluble elements consisting of a socket jaw and an operating ring having a pawl and ratchet connection, an operating handle being connected with the operating ring, in combination with a holding ring in which said jaw and operating .ring are mounted, said holding ring being provided with an anchoring arm for engagement with a battery box terminal block.
8. A tool for the purpose described having independently revoluble elements consisting of a socket j aw and an operating ring having a pawl and ratchet connection, an operating handle being connected with the operating ring, in combination with a holding ring in which said jaw and operating ring are mounted, said holding ring being provided with an anchoring arm for' engagement with a battery box terminal block disposed in a, plane perpendicular thereto.
4. A tool for the purpose described having independently revoluble elements consisting.
of a socket jaw and an operating ring having a battery box terminal block disposed in a a pawl and ratchet connection, an operating plane perpendicular thereto and provided handle being connected with the operating with an inturned terminal finger.
In testimony whereof he aifixes his signaring, in combination with a holding ring in which said jaw and operating ring are mounted, said holding ring being provided with an anchoring arm for engagement with ture.
