Abstract

1393251 Attachment of sails to stays T B DOWLING 14 Aug 1972 [17 Aug 1971 10 Dec 1971] 38490/71 and 57485/71 Heading B7V A staysail 6, e.g. a jib, is attached to a stay 1, e.g. a forestay, by means of a fairing 3 which is carried by the stay 1 and which is provided with a channel formation 14 into which are slideably engaged a plurality of slide members 15 secured to the luff edge of the sail 6. The fairing 3 is formed from two plastics mouldings 9 which are joined by screws 10 so that the fairing 3 surrounds the stay 1 and is slidable and freely rotatable thereon. The slide members 15 are uniformly spaced along the luff edge of the sail 6 and are secured thereto by rivets 16. The arrangement also includes a second channel member 8 in which the slide elements are engaged when the sail 6 is in an inoperative or stowed condition. The procedure for setting the sail 6 is as follows: (a) the tack of the sail is secured in conventional manner, (b) the member 8 carrying the sail 6 is placed in a socket 5 carried by an extension 4 of the fairing 3 (see Fig. 1), (c) a curved extension 18 on the member 8 is hooked around the stay 1 (see Fig. 8) and the member 8 is moved upwardly until a projection 19 on the member engages a recess 20 on the fairing 3 so that the two channels are in line, the fairing 3 and member 8 being held in this position by a spring catch (not shown) and (d) a halyard 22 is attached to the head of the sail 6 which is then hoisted, the slide elements 15 being transferred to the channel 14 in the fairing 3. In a modification (not shown) the second channel member is flexible and leads to the sail locker so that the sail can be set straight from its stowage.
