Abstract
1391589 Mines K E CONROY and S LYNN 4 Sept 1962 [5 Sept 1961] 33927/62 Heading F3A An anti-personnel mine has a detonator container and a firing mechanism movable within its body in a first direction to release a detent means, which allows the firing mechanism to move in a second direction to enable its firing pin to be resiliently urged into contact with the detonator. The construction of the mine is largely in non-metallic materials, thus rendering its detection more difficult, and extensive use is made of plastics materials. An upper plastics body portion 2 is screwed into a lower plastics body portion 3. The upper body portion 2 contains a Monroe type charge 43 of pressed tetryl in a removable plastics moulded charge container 4. The plastics moulded detonator container 5 is housed in a lower portion 14 of the upper body portion 2 which extends into the lower body portion 3. The firing mechanism, which is housed in the lower body portion 2, comprises the firing pin 29 around which is moulded a plastics pin carrier 28, a number of balls 30 retained in grooves 23 in the pin carrier, and a spring 27. The specification gives details of various constructions of detonator container one of which is capable of housing more than one type of standard detonator, and also describes a practice version of the mine constructed in a slightly different manner and using a smoke generating charge in place of the explosive charge 43. In operation, when the charge container is depressed, it moves downward in the upper body portion 2 and also forces down the detonator container and firing mechanism against the action of the firing pin spring 27. The balls 30 drop or are forced away from the grooves 23 when the downward displacement is sufficient to clear the lower end of the body portion 14, thus releasing the firing pin and allowing it to strike the detonator. An 0-ring 42 and ribs 17 in the upper body portion 2 respectively limit the ingress of foreign matter, and prevent any that does enter between the charge container and body from jamming the charge container.
