Abstract

1,174,049. Rocket launchers. OERLIKONBUHRLE HOLDING A.G. 21 Dec., 1966 [23 Dec., 1965], No. 57258/66. Heading F3C. A rocket launcher device comprises a launcher tube 2 having a rocket 8 held therein by a launching release mechanism fitted to the forward end of the tube 2 and a rocket motor ignition device fitted to the rearward end of the tube 2. The ignition device comprises a spring loaded, striker pin 16 guided within, and lockable to a sleeve 5 which in turn is guided within a locking component 9. The locking component is slidably guided axially in an end portion of the launcher tube 2. A spring 11 urges the locking component 9 towards the rocket 8 but the locking component is held against this spring pressure by means of the launching release mechanism which may include a cap 31 resiliently held in the mouth of the launcher tube 2 by a plurality of leaf springs 33, and a plurality of safety balls 30 urged into a groove 32 by the cap 31. The striker pin 16 is held in its cocked position by the sleeve 15 wherein the locking is effected by a plurality of balls 19 seated in holes 18 in the sleeve 15 and urged into a recess 17 in the striker pin by the walls of a bore in the locking component 9. The sleeve 15 is held against movement with respect to the launcher tube 2 by an arming spacer fork 21. On release of the launching release mechanism by pulling a ring 56 having a lanyard 34 connected thereto, the locking component 9 urges the rocket 8 forwardly, movement of the locking component releasing the balls 19 and allowing the preloaded striker pin 16 to be thrown against a primer charge 10. If the arming spacer fork 21 is not placed about the sleeve 15, the enlarged head 20 of the sleeve 15, on release of the launching release mechanism, enters the bore, in which the locking component 9 slides so that the sleeve 15 and striker pin 16 combination follow the motion of the locking component 9 such that the striker pin 16 does not engage the primer charge 10. In a modification (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) the rocket is held in the launching tube by a ball passing through an aperture in the wall of the tube and held therein by a rotatable sleeve, rotation of the sleeve freeing the ball. Also a further spring loading is applied the rocket.
