Abstract

859,458. Dropping bombs and other articles from aircraft. BRODEN, E. W. April 22, 1959 No. 13704/59. Class 9(2). Mechanism for releasing bombs and other articles from aircraft, as in Specification 734,988, comprises a housing 11 fixed to the aircraft and united to a releasable member 10, which is connected to the bomb, by a sleeve 12 surrounding a piston 15, the piston being used to hold locking balls 34 in engagement with the member 10 until such time as the bomb is to be released. The piston, which bears against a spring 17 supported by a plug 18 secured in the sleeve 12 by a pin 20, has a through passage 26 housing an end of a lever 24. During transport, a pin 45 extending through the housing 11 locks the piston against accidental movement. Further locking balls 21, 22 housed in the piston are thrust into engagement with a groove in the sleeve 12 by a spring 23. To drive the piston and so release the member 10 and its load, a charge 29 is fired by a primer 28, which is electrically ignited. An expansion chamber 32 is provided between the cartridge housing 27 and the piston. Apertures 33 in the member 10 are of sufficient diameter to allow free passage to the balls 34 and have their axes inclined to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve at an angle α. Similar bores through the sleeve 12 are inclined at an angle #, which is greater than x. To prevent the balls 34 escaping an apertured holder 37 is secured around the sleeve 12 by the pin 20, the apertures being smaller than the balls 34. Support surfaces for the balls are also provided by the shaping of a flange 40 on the piston. On firing the charge 29, the thrust on the piston severs the pin 45 and displaces the piston, so that the balls 34 move inwardly and free the member 10. Spring 17 restores the piston to its original position and the balls 21, 22 engage the sleeve again, so that to secure a fresh load, the piston must be depressed by means of the lever 24.
