Abstract

851,460. Ammunition fuzes. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS (AIRCRAFT) Ltd., CURL, T. I., AMBROSE, M. J. F., and BURCH A. E. Feb. 17, 1959 [March 10, 1958], No. 7690/58. Class 9(1). Contacts 13, 14 of an electric fuze closed on impact are mounted on a probe 12, which may be retracted within the projectile casing 11, during stowage, resilient means 15 being provided to drive the probe to the operative position. In addition releasable locking means are provided to hold the probe in the operative position. Conductors (not shown) connect the contacts 13, 14 to a fuze or igniter in the body 10. A cap (not shown) may be placed over the contacts to protect them during handling and transport. Rotation of the probe is prevented by a pin 18 extending into a longitudinal groove 19. The rear end of the probe has an interrupted flange 17, which bears against a similar flange on a locking collar 21 when the probe is in the operative position. To retract the probe, the collar 21 is rotated by means of a lever 23 until openings in the collar flange are aligned with the flange parts 17. The probe can then be pushed into the projectile, the collar being held in the release position by engagement of a pin 25 with the groove 19 against the force of return spring 22. The projectile may then be stowed in a container which holds the probe retracted. Bolts 214 passing through arcuate slots in the collar allow rotation while preventing axial movement of the collar. Alternatively the collar may have splined engagement with recesses in the body 11.
