A cartridge-actuated fastener driving tool comprises a two-part barrel 8, 9 mounted for axial movement in a housing member 5, a fastener driving piston 18, a closure member 20 for closing the cartridge chamber 19, and a removable protective cap 13. The tool is illustrated in its operative condition, that is when pressed against a work surface. Release of the tool from the surface will initially cause the forward barrel part 9 to move forwardly relative to rearward barrel part 8 by a limited amount determined by a ring 11 engaging in groove 10 and biased by a spring 12. Subsequently the barrel will be urged forward relative to the housing member 5 by springs 25 and 21 until a circlip 20b or the closure member 20 engages a rear housing member 1. The barrel will then be moved to its forward inoperative position by the spring 25 alone. In the forward position a spring-biased ball 28 engages in a detent 8c. The springs 12, 21, 25 are such that the forward barrel part 9 cannot be moved rearwardly relative to the rearward barrel part until the latter is in the illustrated position. When the rearward barrel part is in the illustrated position and the forward barrel part 9 has not been moved rearwardly relative to the rearward barrel part, a line joining the muzzle end of the barrel and the periphery of the cap makes an angle with the plane of the mouth of the cap not exceeding 7 degrees. Pivoting of trigger 29 about pin 31 initially cocks firing-pin 22 and then releases it, thus detonating a cartridge when the tool is pressed against a work surface. Forward housing member 2 which is secured to the member 5 is movable relative to sleeve 6 which is pivoted at 7 to the rear housing member 1. The tool is opened by rotating the housing member 2, 5 through 90 degrees, then sliding those members axially forwardly, and finally pivoting these members and sleeve 6 about the pin 7. A spring-urged safety catch 14 engages in an annular groove 9a when the barrel is in its forward position and the cap 13 is removed.
