A cartridge-actuated tool for driving fasteners such as studs or pins into a wall comprises a cartridge-receiving plug 33 slidable within a barrel 32 and cylindrical members 27, 6 having projections 66, 67 respectively for co-operation with projections 62, Fig. 4 (not shown), on the barrel such that when the projections are disengaged the barrel can be moved towards or away from the cartridge receiving plug and when the projections are engaged the barrel is locked against such movement. The rear cylindrical member 6 is slidably mounted in a housing 2 and has secured therein a guide 7 for a firing pin 10 loaded by a spring 12 and normally retained in the position shown by a locking piece 15. The front cylindrical member 27 is mounted in a housing 26 and when the tool is closed as shown, abuts the rear cylindrical member and is connected therewith by the interlocking projections 62 on the barrel. In operation, in order to load a cartridge in the tool, the housing 26 is moved forwardly against the action of a spring 29, the barrel turned through 45 degrees to disengage the projections and pulled forwardly, and then the barrel assembly pivoted about a pin 3 to the open position ; during the pivoting action an ejector 38 ejects the previously spent cartridge. The new cartridge is then inserted and the above procedure reversed. To fire the cartridge the end of the barrel is pressed against a workpiece, thereby causing both cylindrical membors to move rearwardly and so load the firing pin. To release the firing pin a trigger 23 is moved which abuts a rocker arm and causes a pawl 20 on the latter to move the locking piece 15 and release the pin. In order to vary the force of the explosion, the space 34 below the cartridge chamber 35 is decreased or increased by releasing a catch 58 from a slot 57 in the barrel and rotating the latter so that different projections 62 on the barrel engage with those on the cylindrical member. A sub-barrel 43 is connected to the front end of the main barrel by means of a collar 44 having a weakened portion 52 so that if the plunger 47 strikes the end of the barrel with excessive force the collar breaks.
