Abstract

1391025 Locking caps for tanks P JOURNEE 7 May 1973 [19 May 1972] 21597/73 Heading B8T A locking cap for a tank is characterized by a non-return valve which allows the tank to breathe in, but not out, unless the locking key is inserted, which action allows excess pressure to be released. The cap has a closure member 2 with a hub portion 3 carrying a fixed ring 5, an annular sealing gasket 6 and a locking ring 4 which locates beneath the rolled edge of the tank intake pipe 1. Within the hub 3 is a lock barrel 7 and beneath it a valve consisting of a cylinder 8 and a piston 9 with a frusto-conical head 10 which is normally held against a seat 11 by a spring 12 to form a seal. When a key 13 is inserted, its end pushes the piston head 10 off the seat 11 and connects the annular gap which surrounds the lock barrel 7 to the inside of the tank. Gases can then escape via the radially interconnected concentric grooves on the underside of the closure member 2 and are defected downwards by the skirt of the cap. Negative pressures within the tank are eliminated since they give rise to downward forces on the piston 9, thereby opening the valve against pressure from the spring 12. A second embodiment shows an annular antipollution filter included in the venting circuit.
