A high pressure container 2 for withstanding internal pressures of up to at least 10,000 kp/cm<SP>2</SP> at temperatures of up to 250‹ C., comprises a closure member 1 which has spaced lugs 7, which are adapted to engage beneath similar dogs 7 integral with the wall of the container in the manner of a bayonet fastening, and an undercut shoulder 9 around its lower edge which, when the container is closed by the closure 1, extends below a frustoconical surface which connects smaller lower and larger upper cylindrical internal surfaces of the container, the recess formed by the shoulder accommoding a seal comprising a resilient backing ring 35 of high strength metal, two sealing rings.36 of plastically deformable material, and an elastic sealing element 37. In order to maintain the sealing rings pressed against the closure 1 a ring 38, having a nose 40 which projects into a recess in the ring 37, is screwed to the base of the closure 1. A bearing ring 31 is provided in a recess in the frusto conical portion of the container wall, and a venting bore 41 leads to a screwed connector 43. Apparatus for handling the closure 1, comprises a base 19 into which the container 2 is let and which supports a rotatable column 20 which carries an arm 21 which supports a. hydraulic cylinder 22 having a piston which is connected to a spacer 24 adapted to engage the closure 1. When the closure is swung in position and lowered into the container a fixed rack, (not shown), meshes with a toothed rim segment 25 on the closure to turn the latter through a distance equal to half the pitch of the lugs and dogs 7, 13, and. lock the closure in the container. The closure has a recess 3 which increases the internal volume of the container and a vent bore 4.
