Abstract

1394015 Anti-pollution caps for tanks; venting petrol tanks P JOURNEE 7 May 1973 [19 May 1972] 21589/73 Headings B8T and B8V A filler cap for a tank is characterized by the inclusion of a replaceable cartridge of material which depollutes the gas issuing from the tank via a labyrinth of grooves. Cap 4 has a cover member 10 containing locking means 12 to which is pinned a collar 11. Around the hub of the cover member 10 is a ring 15 with an interrupted periphery which locates beneath a cam portion 3 of a tank filler pipe 1. A spring 14 pulls the cover member 10 downwards with respect to the ring 15 until a gasket 17 seats on to a rim 2 of the filler pipe 1. A sheet metal cover 8 is screwed on to a skirt 9 of the cover member 10 and defines an annular space which is occupied by the cartridge 7 containing a depollutant material 5. Raised part 24 of the cover member 10 mates with a recess 27 in the cartridge 7 and connects channels 18 in the former to apertures 25 in the latter. On the underside of the cover member 10 is a series of interconnected circumferential grooves 28, the outermost of which is connected to channels 18. The tank is connected to the innermost of the grooves 28 via an annular gap around the hub of the cover member 10 and a radial channel in the shoulder part of the cover member 10 resting on the ring 16. The depollutant material 5 is connected to atmosphere by way of passages (not shown) to the annular passage 29. Pressure drop along the fluid path prevents escape of gas until the pressure differential reaches a certain value. A second embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), shows the sheet metal cover 8 secured by bayonet means rather than by a screw thread. The casing of the cartridge 7 may be made from material permeable to gases.
