Abstract

1411127 Closure caps ANCHOR HOCKING CORP 27 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971] 49721/72 Heading B8T A sealed package comprises a closure 2 applied to a container 3. The closure 2 has an annular compressible gasket 5 applied to the inside of the cap skirt and the cap cover 7 either by flowing into the cap as a ring or by inserting a pre-form and shaping it by a moulding tool to have a thickened top sealing portion 10 with a thinner skirt portion 11. When the cap is applied to the finish 4 of the container 3, portions of skirt 11 are bulged inwards to engage in slots 12 spaced around the periphery of the container, forming projections 13 which retain the closure 2 on container 3. The slots 12 have sloped ends or ramps (17), Fig. 5 (not shown), and on removing the cap 2 by twisting, the projections 13 ride up ramps (17) on to bridging sections 18 between the slots, reducing the radial depth of gasket 5 and releasing projections 13 from slots 12. Simultaneously the vacuum is broken by the provision of an air path (19), Fig. 7 (not shown), under skirt 11, over the rim 15 of the container, and through venting grooves 20 around the edge of the jar. Additional venting depressions (21), Fig. 8 (not shown), may also be present. The container finish may have flats (25) (27), Figs. 11, 12-13 (not shown), with vertical or tapered faces to assist in breaking the vacuum. Preformed gaskets with angled projections (36), Fig. 15 (not shown), may be used to assist in removal from the container, and projecting knobs (33), (45), Figs. 14-15 (not shown), on the gasket prevent nesting prior to use.
